Rip DVDs on Mavericks…

So I was very much not amused when loading a DVD into my “Superdrive” – and it opening the DVD Player application, requesting me to enter a region code – and ejecting the DVD when aborting the process. Moving the DVD app out of the way (or changing the default action in the system preferences to “do nothing”) resolved the demand for a region code, but left the video files on the DVD unreadable. I then found out about the “MacX DVD Ripper Pro” app which doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and does allow for reading (and converting e.g. into MKV) a DVD even if the region code was never set on the drive. For the occasional archiving of a DVD, it seems to be a good deal, even so more as VLC doesn’t appear to be able to read those files on a Mac.
